INDEX: Award is still the only design award in the world focusing exclusively on Design to Improve Life. But that was not how the award was imagined back in 2002, when the Danish state set out to brand Denmark through an international design event, at a time when people still thought of white tea cups and chic lamps when they heard the word ‘design’…
The winners of INDEX: Award have since 2005 been announced at black-tie gala ceremonies in unique venues in Denmark, ranging from Copenhagen City Hall and the capital’s Concert Hall to an abandoned shipyard in Elsinore and the Copenhagen Opera.
The most recent award ceremony held in Elsinore on August 27th 2015 featured 1,300 guests from 35 countries – including HRH the Crown Princess of Denmark. All guests witnessed the award ceremony come to life as a 60-minute live TV broadcast of nothing but ‘good news’ about Design to Improve Life. The show was anchored by revered Danish TV personalities Lillian Gjerulf Kretz and Steffen Kretz.
INDEX: Award Exhibition is a unique world touring exhibition displaying the winners and finalists of INDEX: Award and has been seen by more than 14 million people around the world.
The exhibition is always displayed in public spaces with free access for all. It offers a profound insight into how design can improve important areas of people’s lives, while allowing designers and manufacturers to gain knowledge about how to create designs that are not only beautiful, but also sustainable in every aspect of production.
According to tradition, the days of INDEX: Award celebrations in Denmark are smack full of wonderful and laidback events, headlined by our ‘Design Picnic’ in one of Copenhagen’s finest green patches, The King’s Gardens, and our notoriously fun ‘Design Dinner’ where we invite our international guests to eat with us in private Copenhagen homes. We do this to show our guests how we live, how we eat and how we have fun. Enjoy the pictures!
